Interview - Audio Issues creator

Here below is an interview that was published in one of Iceland's national papers, Morgunbladid(The Morning Paper). It was a great opportunity to be interviewed about Audio Issues and its purpose. I decided, since most of my readers aren't especially adept in the Icelandic language, to translate it into English. Enjoy the interview here below.

"freaking awesome snare drum sound"

Björgvin Benediktsson is a man, who some people might remember as the guitarist from Pan. Björgvin finished his studies in audio engineering in Madrid recently, where he graduated at the top of his class. Soon he will be heading to Arizona for further studies. Alongside his studies he runs the audio related website www.audio-issues.com that's been making noises in the audio world as of late. Additionally, he has been prolific in writing for other audio related websites.

"This economic disaster gives you a chance of creating something for yourself. If you are persistent enough something usually comes along" says Björgvin.

Two birds with one stone.

What made you want to go abroad to study audio engineering?

"After school I started working at this concert venue, The Old Library in Hafnarfjördur as a live sound engineer. I enjoyed the job so much I started reading as much about mixing and engineering as I could. I later found out, like many Icelandic sound-techs, that the SAE Institute was a good option for enthusiastic recordists. I decided to go about it a little differently and went to Madrid, Spain, where all the studies were in Spanish.

You seem to be quite knowledgeable about the topics you write about. Had you accumulated a lot of knowledge before starting your studies?

"I read as much as I can about these topics. I was the weird guy in school who loved his schoolbooks. I wanted to know how everything worked, from the ground up so I could understand it better.

Every window open

One can tell by your site that you seem adept at creating your own opportunities...

"I created it a half a year ago or so. I took a course on web business and marketing(through a service called Site Build it) that taught me how to create a business or presence online. After that I created this brand "Audio Issues" which is aimed at helping beginners in audio production deal with their audio production problems." says Björgvin.

Now you are going to study music and business in Arizona. How do you see the future?

"Teaching material like these articles are some of the things I would like to continue doing. I do feel best in front of the computer trying to mix some audio but it's a very competitive market and very expensive to start your own studio. But that's something I definitely have an interest in. The idea is to be equally skilled in the production-, music- and business side of the music industry. That way, every window is open.

Crash Test dummies?

Who is the best engineer/producer of all time.

"It might be a cliché to say, but George Martin and Geoff Emerick are definitely among the greatest in history. George Martin saw how you can make all the Beatles songs classic pop songs while Geoff Emerick managed to make them sound timeless.

And what is the best sounding record of all time

"I think I'll give a really weird answer and say God Shuffled His Feet with the Crash Test Dummies. That record has an amazing atmosphere, incredible vocals and a freaking awesome snare drum sound. It also has a very cool acoustic guitar sound. It just is an incredible open-sounding record, well produced and mixed.
