Best Method for a Center channel?

Question

I'm just wondering: What is a better method of creating a center channel from a mixer with only stereo outs, no separate mono out, and no LCR mode? (Mackie 24-8 used for live sound)

The two methods I am currently aware of is a post-fader aux send and summing the left and right main outputs together. what are the pros and cons of each?

Answer

I'm not sure what you are referring to. What is your ultimate goal here? Are you trying to do a live mix with L-C-R?

Many mixers actually have a summed center output you can use for exactly this reason, but if I needed a center channel with limited gear I would probably try to use a send as you mentioned.

If you think of the center channel as a separate monitor mix you can just put every send to the same level, but post-fader. That way it's the same mix as you have in your outputs but only routed to one speaker, or output.

Hope this helps. Comment on the post if you want to discuss this further.
