When the Mbox doesn't quite cut it, maybe the Digi 003 system is for you. You still don't want to spend your money on an expensive HD system, but want a more serious recording system than the Mbox. These interfaces are a great solution if you need more than 2 inputs as they come with more XLR inputs than the Mbox, allowing you at least 8 channel simultaneous multitrack recording.
Which one should you choose? Depends on your budget, your preference when it comes to working with a controller and all the possible scenarios you might encounter when using these types of gear.
The Rack is easier when you are planning on doing all of your mixing in the box and don't need an external controller or faders to move. But if you want that extra human feel and like to twist and turn knobs and move faders up and down I highly recommend checking out the Digi 003 controller/mixer.
As said before, the rack system is a great option for anyone that likes mixing in the box. If you feel comfortable only using Pro-Tools to mix and need more than a couple of channels then the rack is definitely something for you.
To be completely honest I didn't realize before I did the research that they had this premium rack production system. Digidesign managed to create a very attractice home recording package with eight simultaneous multitrack recording that enables you to record a complete drum kit or a live performance without breaking a sweat. And all with this handy 19ยจ rack interface.
The Digi controller/mixer is a great option for those of you that like a more hands on approach. With faders, pan knobs and all sorts of parameters, you can get your hands dirty and mix like you would on a regular mixing desk, except this one transfers every move you make into the Pro-Tools software.
It has switchable banks of faders so no matter how many tracks you have you can control each one by switching back and forth between bank, everything fully visible and marked on the LED screens. If there is one Digidesign product I fully recommend it's this one. It combines everything that's great with Pro-Tools with an intuitive hands on interface.x
