The internet is filled with plenty of free VST plugins, ripe for the picking.
There is no need to shell out all that money for expensive Waves plugins(they sure sound good though) if you can get some great alternatives for free online.
Whether you're looking to spice up your reverb sounds or need some tape saturation, you can find it all here, for free.
If you are tired of the same old reverb sounds your DAW gives you why not take a look at some of the free reverbs out there. VST Planet has a nice selection of some free plugins that can handle your reverb needs.

If reverb isn't your thing then maybe you would like to switch gears and check out some of the interesting echoes and delays to use in your production. Whether you want analog tape modulation or crazy echo mania be sure to check out some of the plugins from The Interruptor.
I wouldn't say A.D.T. Is a hard technique to master(check out the tutorial on Automatic Double Tracking here) but it's nice to have a plugin that takes care of the hassle for you.

I know amp simulator like Guitar Rig and Amplitube are expensive. And sometimes you don't need all the bells and whistles that come with those types of plugins. So if you need a better alternative, there are some free vst plugins that offer nice cabinet simulation and effects for guitarists. It might not come with the kitchen sink like Guitar Rig, but it sure is cheaper.
Lastly, Variety of Sound has(wait for it...) a variety of plugins too! Variety of Sound offers some pretty bad-ass looking free vst plugins ranging from EQ and saturation emulator to digital reverb units.
If you want to share some of your discoveries with us, let us know of any free plugins you have found.
