I was playing drums in a small venue trio a few years back. We had experienced a lot of problems trying to get a good balance between our monitors and still have a FOH level that the venue accepted.
We invested in some in ear monitors and we thought it was going to be great. We could get our monitors as loud as we need them and still not blast the small bar in which we were playing.
We had the sound isolating headphones and everything sounded great. After the first set, a lady asked me how come we were playing so quietly. I looked at our power mixer and noticed that we forgot to turn on the mains...
