Recording studio furniture - The overlooked home recording equipment

Ergonomic studio design boosts workflow and productivity

When building your home recording studio, you don't think about the recording studio furniture first. You think about all the gear, the interfaces, the monitors and the microphones.

You wonder where to put your acoustic treatment to make the room sound good, but not a lot of thought is put into where to put all your stuff.

Most of the time, your workspace is just going to be an old desk that can fit most of your stuff.

How about putting a little thought into your workspace as well as your microphones and mixers?

Desks

The first thing you need is a nice desk that is big enough to hold all your stuff; monitors, computer and other assorted studio gear. If you have some outboard rack gear it's a good idea to see where you can put it. Amazon has some pretty cool resources for recording studio furniture

If you're lucky, then you might have a desk that fulfills all your needs. I found my workstation desk at a yard sale for $20 so you definitely don't need to splurge money on your recording studio furniture if you can find it used for cheap.

Monitor stands

If you don't have space on your desk, or if your desk is too low to effectively place your monitors in the correct sweet spot, then some monitors stands might be an effective way to give your desk some space while placing your monitors in the correct listening position.

Since you need to place yourself as the third part of a equilateral triangle when monitoring, using monitor stands to easily place your monitors behind your desk is an easy and cool design solution for your home studio. Nice looking stands like the Gator Cases 42-Inch Monitor Stands can be a cool looking design factor for your studio.

Racks

If you do a lot of on location recording - or frequently need to move your recording gear around - investing in a movable rack for your outboard effects and recording gear might be a good recording studio furniture solution. studio rack

That way you both have a lightweight case to put your gear in, such as the Gator Shallow Rack and you can take it with you to use at live shows or recordings.

Even if you don't need to take it with you anywhere, investing in a sturdy rack unit such as the Middle Atlantic RK12 Rack is a nice addition to your home recording studio. It helps clean up your desk space if you were using your workstation desk for all your outboard gear and recording equipment.

Conclusion

It's clear that recording studio furniture should be taken into account when creating a home recording studio. It doesn't matter what kind of work you are doing, a clean and comfortable workspace is always a big catalyst in getting the productive juices flowing.

You can't go wrong with a nice workstation desk for your computer and accessories, monitor stands for correct monitoring and sturdy racks for all your outboard gear. You can either try to make do with what you've got, throwing some DIY to create a pleasant workspace or be lucky like me and find some of your furniture at a yard sale.

Just make sure that you feel comfortable in your studio otherwise you won't feel motivated to do anything there.
